READING

"Dialectical and Historical Matetialism": 'Understanding why change happens' [Communist Party Syllabus: Section 1: 'Materialism', pages 4-10]

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER

How are ideas formed?

Can you think of a situation from your own experience of work or study where a 'dialectical-materialist' outlook has been, or might prove, useful?

Why do communists stress the importance of 'theory'?

What is the relationship between 'theory' and 'practice'?

Why is it important to understand the real nature of this relationship?

In preparing for the classes, comrades are expected to undertake the basic reading and should try, in thinking about that reading material, to focus on the above questions.

The Syllabus is readily available from the Scottish Committee (Unity Books).
